“Any news?” Two words, asked lightly at a naming ceremony or over the phone. For a woman who has been trying for years, they can undo a whole week.
The Weight We Carry
In many of our communities, a marriage is expected to produce a child quickly. When it does not, the pressure tends to fall on the woman — from in-laws, from church or mosque, from friends with good intentions. Many women carry this alone, hiding appointments, test results and grief.
The WHO recognises that infertility can cause significant distress, stigma and social isolation. You are not weak for feeling it.
The Myth That Hurts Most
Infertility is not only a woman’s issue. Male factors contribute in a large share of couples. A husband who has never been tested has not been ruled out — please read Why Your Husband Needs to Be Tested Too and, if it helps, share it with him or his family.
Protecting Your Mind
- Prepare an answer. “We’re trusting God’s timing,” or “That’s between us,” then change the subject. You do not owe anyone details.
- Choose one or two safe people you can be honest with.
- Protect your marriage. Let some evenings be about each other, not about trying.
- Limit what you consume — pregnancy announcements, forums, constant searching.
- Speak to a counsellor if the sadness becomes heavy, constant, or frightening.
Stress and Fertility
Please hear this carefully: stress does not mean you caused your infertility, and “just relax” is not treatment. But long-term stress and poor sleep do affect hormones, and caring for your mind is part of caring for your fertility — see Stress, Sleep and Your Fertility.
