Many women are told their blood sugar is “normal” because a single fasting glucose test came back fine. Yet their bodies may be producing far more insulin than they should to keep it that way. That hidden effort matters for fertility.
What Insulin Resistance Is
Insulin moves sugar from the blood into the cells. When cells stop responding well, the pancreas makes more and more insulin to compensate. Blood sugar may look normal for years while insulin levels quietly climb.
How It Affects Fertility
- High insulin stimulates the ovaries to produce more androgens (male-type hormones), which interfere with ovulation.
- It is a central driver in many women with PCOS.
- It is linked to poorer egg quality and higher miscarriage risk.
- It raises the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnancy.
Signs That Point to It
- Darkened, velvety skin on the back of the neck, armpits or groin
- Skin tags
- Weight that settles around the waist and is hard to shift
- Strong sugar cravings and energy crashes after meals
- Irregular periods, acne, or excess facial hair
- A family history of type 2 diabetes
Tests to Ask About
Fasting glucose alone can miss it. Ask whether HbA1c, fasting insulin, or an oral glucose tolerance test would be appropriate for you — and ask to see the numbers, as we encourage in Why Aren’t You Asking to See Your Own Results?.
Turning It Around
- Build meals around protein, vegetables and fibre; eat starches with them, not alone.
- Swap sugary drinks — including many “healthy” juices — for water and unsweetened teas.
- Walk for 10–15 minutes after your largest meal.
- Strength exercise helps muscles take up sugar.
- Protect your sleep.
Insulin resistance responds well to consistent change. Alongside these steps, our herbal programmes include plants traditionally used to support healthy blood sugar and hormone balance. Where a doctor prescribes medication, we work alongside it. Ask us how.
