I’ve noticed something that genuinely concerns me.
A woman goes for a scan. The gynaecologist tells her: “You have fibroids and cysts.” She nods. She doesn’t see the actual scan. She isn’t told the size. She isn’t given a copy of the report. And she walks away — diagnosis in hand, but no real understanding of what’s actually going on in her own body.
How do you walk away from an appointment like that?
The Questions You Are Allowed to Ask
It makes sense to ask: How big is the fibroid? Where exactly is it located? Has it changed since the last scan? Can I see the report myself? These aren’t difficult questions. They’re your right to ask. (For the full list of tests every woman trying to conceive should have — and understand — read You Are Not Infertile — You May Just Be Uninformed.)
Get a Second Opinion — On Purpose
If you see one gynaecologist, get a second opinion. If both specialists are telling you the same thing, fine — now you have clarity, and that clarity means something because you sought it out.
The Double Standard That Troubles Me
So many women walk into a gynaecologist’s office and accept everything they’re told without question. No follow-up. No request for documentation. No “can you explain that further?” Total silence.
Yet those same women, when they sit with a traditional or herbal practitioner, suddenly have a list of questions ready — questions about things that often don’t even matter clinically. Why is that?
Your fertility and your health deserve the same energy, curiosity, and advocacy no matter who is sitting across from you. Ask your gynaecologist to show you the scan. Ask for the measurements. Ask what it means for your fertility journey. Ask for a written report you can keep and reference. And if the numbers change over time, you’ll know — the same way you would if you were reading the other signals your body sends every month.
Walk Toward Your Results
You are allowed to understand your own body. You are allowed to ask questions. You are allowed to seek a second opinion. Don’t walk away from your own results. Walk toward them.
At Ohemaa Fertile Home, we encourage every woman we work with to be an active participant in her own care — because you deserve to understand exactly what’s happening with your body, every step of the way. (Not sure which signs to take seriously? See Fertility Red Flags Your Body Is Sending.)
