The Gym Supplement That Could Be Shutting Down His Sperm

zkn3vmxnhk

It sounds backwards: the hormone that makes a man a man can stop him from becoming a father. But this is one of the most important things we explain to couples where the husband trains seriously.

How Taking Testosterone Switches Off Sperm

Sperm production depends on signals from the brain — FSH and LH — telling the testicles to make both sperm and testosterone. When testosterone is taken from outside, by injection, gel or anabolic steroid, the brain sees high levels and stops sending those signals. Testosterone in the blood stays high, but the testicles go quiet. Sperm counts can drop dramatically, sometimes to zero.

Where Men Are Getting It

  • Anabolic steroids used for bodybuilding — often bought without prescription
  • Testosterone prescribed for low energy or low libido, without any discussion of fertility
  • Some “test boosters” and pre-workout products that contain undeclared hormones

Signs Worth Noticing

  • Testicles becoming smaller or softer
  • Breast tissue swelling
  • Acne, mood changes, irritability
  • A semen analysis showing very low or no sperm

Can It Recover?

Often, yes — but it takes time. After stopping, many men see sperm production return over several months, though for some, particularly after long or heavy use, it can take a year or more and may need specialist medical treatment. Stopping should be planned with a doctor rather than done abruptly and alone.

What We Ask Every Couple

When we look at male fertility, we ask directly about gym supplements, injections and prescriptions. Men are rarely asked, and rarely volunteer it. There is no judgement in the question — only the knowledge that the answer can explain everything.
